Granite Countertops
This material is a natural stone harvested from the earth in its natural form. Granite is created from heat and pressure to create one of the most durable materials for custom countertop material. Granite is becoming more and more popular in the home because of its resistance to staining and heat and its durability to stand up to the harsh chemicals used in a kitchen.
The Look Of Granite
Granite countertops tend to be more granular and less uniform in color. Almost all colors are available in granite but not in a uniform shape. All patterns and styles of granite are created by nature and no 2 granite slabs are exactly the same.
Where can I use Granite for countertops?
Granite is a great surface for all indoor and outdoor applications. All surfaces need to be supported if more than 9 inch overhang for standard countertop applications.
Granite Vs Quartz Countertops
Granite and quartz are the leading material for custom countertops. The form function and design of the material are all unmatched for these materials. Granite has an edge when it comes to durability and heat resistance. Quartz has an edge when it comes to being non porous so no sealing and color control of the material. You have more options with quartz material when it comes to color control and design. Granite is slightly less expensive.
Granite vs Quartzite countertops
These materials are very close with a slight edge given to quartzite for density so closer to non porous but this material still needs to be sealed. Granite is less expensive than most quartzites and quartzite is closer to Marbles in visual appeal (which is a personal preference but is the trend today).
Granite VS Marble Countertops
Granite has the edge over Marble in the durability department. The process in which the 2 materials are created make granite a much more durable material than marble. Granite is less likely to etch because at the extreme heat that the material is created impurities are burned off in the process so the only thing left is indigneous rock.
Cons of Granite
It must be sealed. This natural material has pits and fissures so the sealer prevents forign substances from getting into the surface. The limitations of colors and design control is kinda what makes granite what it is a natural material that is completely unique and very durable.
Cost of Granite
Granite is one of the most cost effective materials that you can put in your kitchen, the cost varies from state to state, availability, and the costs associated with harvesting the material from the earth. Many factors go into the final cost to the consumer. The material is just one of them. Entry level granite is one of the least expensive materials in the custom countertop category. The amount of material you need to cover the surface area is just one factor
